    the local-only stuff

Chapter 01 · How to use

Pick 1–2 tools per section. Don't try to use them all — it becomes noise. Build a single spreadsheet. Filter ruthlessly.

The flow

Eight filters take you from 1000s to 6–8.

Don't browse universities. Filter them. Each layer cuts the list down — every layer uses different tools.

Start

1000s of universities

  1. 1

    Country

    Pick 2–3 target countries

    ~200 unis
  2. 2

    Program search engines

    Mastersportal, FindAMasters, GradRight

    ~80 unis
  3. 3

    Hard eligibility cutoffs

    CGPA, IELTS, GRE, prereqs

    ~40 unis
  4. 4

    Money filter

    Scholarship · assistantship · affordable

    ~25 unis
  5. 5

    Fit filter

Faculty research · curriculum · location

    ~15 unis
  6. 6

    Admit predictor + real data

    Yocket, Grad Cafe, Admits.fyi

    ~10 unis
  7. 7

    Deadline feasibility

Can you actually file in time?

    ~8 unis
  8. 8

    Career outcomes & visa

    Alumni network · H-1B data · sponsorship

    6–8 final
Finish

6–8 final shortlist

2 Ambitious · 3–4 Moderate · 2 Safe

Pick six. Move on.

If you only opened six tabs, open these.

The whole list is 200+ tools. You don't need them all. This is the minimum stack — one site for each layer of the funnel.

  1. Discover programs01

Cast the widest net. Filter by country, level, field, language.

  2. Find the money02

Filter by nationality. Has a real Bangladesh tag.

  3. Predict your odds03

Feed in CGPA + GRE + IELTS. Get Ambitious / Moderate / Safe split.

  4. See real admits04

Don't trust predictors alone. Validate with actual admit data.

  5. Rank by fit05

CSRankings if CS — citation-based, not marketing. Otherwise QS by subject.

  6. Cost reality check06

City-level cost of living. Tuition is half the bill. Living is the other half.

Bangladesh playbook

The hard local stuff

The 9 things every BD applicant trips on — solved.

Student File, WES, dual-currency cards, IOM medical, MOFA attestation, source-of-funds visa traps, airline baggage hacks. Every section here is something you would have learned by losing money or losing time. Read first.

Open a Student File

Mandatory before remittance

Bangladesh Bank requires a Student File before you can legally remit tuition or living costs abroad. Visa officers often check it.

  • Required: original Offer Letter / I-20, Passport, NID
  • Required: sponsor's NID, trade licence or tax returns, cost breakdown
  • Most-recommended banks (Reddit): EBL and City Bank for speed
  • DBBL & Sonali are cheaper but slower in dollar shortages

Some branches will pressure you to open a giant FDR to get a Student File. That is NOT a central-bank rule — try a different branch.

WES & the 3-year NU degree

3-year ≠ 4-year (default)

WES (US/Canada credential evaluation) typically marks a 3-year NU bachelor's as 3 years of UG — not equivalent to a 4-year North American degree.

  • Get transcripts attested at NU One-Stop Service Centre, Gazipur
  • NU must courier in a sealed, stamped envelope — WES rejects self-sent
  • Fix: complete a 1- or 2-year master's in BD first → WES treats as 3+1 or 3+2
  • Alt: try ECE or SpanTran — sometimes more flexible than WES

IOM medical (UK / Canada)

Book 3–4 weeks early

Stays > 6 months in the UK (TB) or Canada (IME) require an IOM-authorised medical. Regular hospitals do not count.

  • Authorised: IOM Dhaka (Gulshan) or Sylhet
  • Canada IME also at Green Crescent Health Services
  • UK TB ≈ 85 USD · Canada IME ≈ 7,000–8,000 BDT
  • Slots fill fast — book before your visa submission window
IOM MyMedical

Dual-currency cards (USD payments)

$300 / single transaction limit

Normal BD debit cards cannot pay USD. You need a dual-currency card endorsed against your travel quota.

  • EBL Aqua Prepaid: ~575 BDT for 3 years, no bank account required
  • BRAC Agami Savers: free student account + free dual-currency debit
  • Take your passport to the bank to physically endorse dollars
  • Fees over $300? Call helpline to lift the limit temporarily

Without the physical passport endorsement, the card declines all USD transactions. Don't skip this step.

MOE → MOFA attestation

Sequential — order matters

Most European and Asian universities require certificates legalised by the Bangladesh government in a strict order.

  • 1. Verify with your Education Board (SSC/HSC) or University Registrar
  • 2. MOE attestation at Shikkha Bhaban, Dhaka
  • 3. MOFA attestation at Segunbagicha, Dhaka
  • MOFA rejects anything that hasn't cleared MOE first

Do NOT laminate your originals. Ministries stamp directly on the back of the paper.

Source-of-funds visa trap

Sudden deposits = red flag

Canada IRCC and US officers don't just check that the money exists — they check it makes economic sense.

  • If 40 lakh BDT lands in a sponsor account 2 months before applying → likely refusal
  • Bank statement must align with sponsor's IT-10B Tax Wealth Statement
  • UK rule: required funds must sit untouched for 28 consecutive days

If the bank shows 50 lakh but the IT-10B shows 5 lakh annual income with no savings history, the officer assumes the money is borrowed for show.

Airline student clubs

+10 to +40 kg baggage

Never buy a standard ticket. Student programmes give you 10–40 kg extra baggage and 10–20% off — the difference between fitting your life and leaving it.

  • Qatar Student Club: 10–20% off, +10 kg or +1 piece, free Super Wi-Fi
  • Emirates Student Offer: code STUDENT — 10% off, +10 kg / +1 piece
  • Turkish Miles&Smiles Student: massive +40 kg on EU/UK routes

IOM-issued student airfare

+10 to +20 kg baggage

IOM Dhaka quietly sells discounted one-way Student Fares on Emirates, Qatar, Singapore Airlines — bookable only by email.

  • Free date change is usually included
  • Cannot book online — email IOMDhaka@iom.int
  • Send: Passport, Student Visa, University Offer Letter to get a quote

Application fee waivers

Reply rate ~30%

Application fees ($75–150) hurt in BDT. Most US grad coordinators have discretion to waive them — ask, with context.

  • Email the graduate coordinator directly — not the central admissions office
  • Use the currency conversion frame: 'this fee is ~50% of the BD minimum monthly wage'
  • Attend virtual open houses — universities often issue waiver codes to attendees

Section 29

Post-study work, alumni & career outcomes

Don't just look at getting in. Look at what happens after. Visa sponsorship + alumni strength = ROI.

What Reddit warns against.

  • Bold.org

Sometimes features low-quality 'essay contests' with low payouts.

  • ScholarshipOwl

Auto-apply convenience — but many user complaints. Use cautiously.

  • Any site asking for upfront payment

Scam. Legitimate scholarships do not charge to apply.

  • Unverified Facebook / Telegram 'agents'

Scam. Anyone promising guaranteed admission is lying.

  • Don't over-index on Grad Café

Survivor bias, anonymous, no context. Useful, but not gospel.
